London is home to an abundance of bike routes for cyclists of all abilities to explore the city’s highlights, with many meandering through picturesque parks and riverside paths. Many Notting Hill Genesis developments are situated close by these routes, with the benefit of secure cycle storage, so residents are perfectly placed to see the sights of the capital from the comfort of a saddle.
The advantages of cycling also extend far beyond sightseeing. More and more people are turning to peddle-power to commute to work, benefiting the environment and improving their fitness at the same time. No bike? No problem. Santander Cycles are also available to hire across the city at the bargain rate of £2 for 30 minutes. Many workplaces also offer employees the Cycle-to-Work scheme to assist with the cost of commuter bikes and accessories and make cycling more accessible to everyone.
Walthamstow is a borough passionate about bike travel – there’s a scenic route through Walthamstow Wetlands that takes you to the heart of the 6,000 untamed acres of Epping Forest, and the 284km of shared-use paths provide the perfect setting to bask in the forest’s ancient history. Residents at Coachmakers Yard also benefit from the development’s segregated cycle routes, and cycle-friendly public spaces.
Should you fancy meeting up with friends at our Heron Quarter at Woodberry Down development, Hackney Council has recently created a cycle-friendly route between Woodberry Wetlands and Walthamstow Wetlands. The investment is designed to create a faster and greener path between the two boroughs, encouraging riders to investigate the nature that’s living right on our doorsteps.
If you’re looking for views across the city, The Kiln Works offers one of the perfect routes. Starting at the picturesque Limehouse Basin, continue along the Thames Path towards Islington which features one of the liveliest canal communities in London, before peddling on to Mile End Park to Victoria Park and following the signs to Broadway Market. Your ride will end with scenic views across London Fields, one of Hackney’s most popular parks.
Our Woolwich Reach development is just a seven minute cycle from National Cycle Route 13, a 114km route that’s not for the faint-hearted. For those up for the challenge, start at the Tower of London and complete the five hour journey which takes riders across road tarmac and bridleway to Maldon, Essex. There’s plenty of pubs and cafés throughout to quench your thirst (or hunger!) as you make your way along the route.
South of the river at Kidbrooke Square, residents have close access to a number of scenic parks, all less than 15 minutes away by bike. Sutcliffe Park – a local nature reserve rich in wildlife – offers a range of outdoor facilities if you’re looking to continue the workout, including an athletics track and outdoor table tennis. Greenwich Park also provides the perfect setting to learn about the history of the borough at the Royal Navy College.
As one of Notting Hill Genesis’ largest developments, Peckham Place has its own cycle lanes within the development, taking you on a journey through lush green space and the pocket park, meaning you don’t have to travel too far from home. Should you be up for tantalising your taste buds post-cycle, Brick House Bakery is just an 11 minute cycle ride away. Named by The Daily Telegraph as one of Britain’s best bakeries for its fresh sourdoughs, it’s well worth a visit at the end of your ride.
Keep your eyes peeled for more news about our newest neighbourhood, Gallions Place, part of the award-winning Royal Albert Wharf development, which offers access to some great cycle routes along the river in east London. Happy cycling!
